Recently, the beauty of teeth (aesthetic treatment) is gaining popularity due to corona misfortune.
This is probably because many people want intensive treatment because it is the time to cover their mouths with a mask.
Therefore, this time, we interviewed Dr. Tomoko Ishida, a popular esthetic dentist and director of the "IS Dental Clinic" in Omotesando, Tokyo, about "dental beauty," which is currently attracting attention.

Q. What is the most popular aesthetic treatment these days?
Whitening is still popular, but recently, people have less opportunities to show their teeth because of the mask life, so "mouthpiece correction" is now very popular.
Mouthpiece orthodontics uses a transparent mouthpiece to align the teeth, but compared to normal wire orthodontics, the appearance is less noticeable, the teeth move faster, and the mouthpiece is detachable. Many people say, "This is the time to wear a mask!" because you can keep it clean.
Other than that, "ceramic correction" is also very popular.
What takes about a year to correct a mouthpiece can be beautiful in about a month with ceramic correction. Although there are disadvantages to cutting teeth, it is still a very popular treatment.
Q. I would also like to ask about “whitening”. I have the impression that there are many people who are interested in whitening but are concerned that it may weaken their teeth. What do you think about that?
The culture of "whitening" itself came from the United States, so the drugs used were based on the teeth of Westerners.
Japanese people have thinner tooth enamel than Europeans and Americans, so the use of strong chemicals causes dryness and hypersensitivity.
At present, there is no need to worry, as medicines that match the thickness of Japanese tooth enamel are being produced.
In addition to whitening teeth, whitening also has the effect of promoting remineralization, strengthening teeth, and preventing stains.
It's also effective against cavities, so it's better to whiten not only from a cosmetic standpoint but also from a preventive standpoint.
Also, the mental aspect is also big, and when everyone's teeth become white, they are motivated to keep it, and they do their best to brush their teeth every day.
For that reason, whitening is highly recommended.
"Kamiawase" has a great impact on beauty and health!
Q. In your book, you advocate the “beauty method for the lower 1/3 of the face”. Among them, "engagement" is especially emphasized.
That's right. A bad bite can affect your health and beauty in many ways.
In terms of health, headaches, neck and shoulder stiffness.
Since occlusion also affects the autonomic nerves, it is said that it leads to hearing loss and various malfunctions.
In terms of beauty, if only one side has nasolabial folds, or if the nasolabial folds themselves are deep, it greatly affects the balance of the contours of the face.
Q.I'm surprised that occlusion affects all kinds of disorders!
In the first place, why is it a bad match?
There are various causes, but if there are teeth that cannot be chewed due to decay, or if you lose teeth due to periodontal disease, the balance of your bite will become worse. Also, resting your chin on your chin or chewing on only one side will also upset your balance. For example, people who usually chew only with their right molars may experience migraine headaches and stiff shoulders on the right side.
The rest is eating.
Remote work has increased due to the corona crisis, but everyone is looking at their computers and smartphones all day. At that time, there are many people who are quite clenched.
It's hard for you to notice whether your bite is good or bad, but for us dentists, it's obvious.
There are many people who have improved their physical condition by treating their occlusion.
In his book, he introduces various beauty methods related to the “lower third of the face,” including occlusion.
Q. About home care for teeth. Please tell me about correct brushing.
Everyone, I think that there is an image of brushing the surface of the teeth, but
Actually, there are only three places to polish.
① Boundary between teeth and gums (periodontal pocket)
② Between teeth
③ Back of teeth
It is OK if you polish only these three places.
If I had to add one more thing, it would be the grooves on the back teeth.
It's easy to make the mistake of brushing your teeth only by scrubbing the surface of your teeth. If you scrub the surface of your teeth too much, you will get fine scratches, and stains (color stains) will easily adhere to those scratches.
Even though the surface of our teeth is smooth with enamel, we are scratching ourselves by brushing hard every day. Surprisingly many people don't know this.
Q.Do not brush the surface of your teeth as much as possible...This was a blind spot. Do you have any tips when choosing a toothbrush?
Choose a soft toothbrush.
The thickness of the bristles of a toothbrush is expressed in units called "mils", but if a commercially available toothbrush is about 10 mils, we dentists recommend a type with fine bristles of 3 to 6 mils.
Earlier, I mentioned brushing between the teeth and gums (periodontal pockets), but hard bristles don't bend, so they won't go into the pockets.
Rather, it damages the gums and causes them to recede. Choose a toothbrush with the finest bristles.
Q. Should I floss after brushing my teeth?
In Europe and the United States, floss is so important that it is said to be "floss or die" (choose either floss or die).
Rather, even if you can't brush your teeth, you can just floss.
That's how much cavities bacteria and periodontal bacteria are piling up between teeth and teeth.
Periodontal disease bacteria are bacteria that hate air, so they grow in places you can't see. Using floss will help you get it out and clean it out.
However, if you floss too much, your gums may recede, so floss once a day instead of after every meal. But make sure you do it every day.
Regular checkups are also effective for checking bad breath
Q. It is a hot topic that the government has made dental examinations compulsory, but how often should dental examinations be done?
Since the environment in your mouth changes every three months, we recommend that you have a check-up once every three months. This is because it is said that it takes about 3 months for the dirt to harden like a stone to form tartar.
After that, it may be surprising, but the dental checkup is also useful for "bad breath check".
Bad breath has a big impact on social life, but it is a part that is difficult to point out.
Therefore, from the perspective of our dentists, we can determine whether there is bad breath.
There are various causes of bad breath, but for example, pus due to periodontal disease bacteria may come out and smell.
Other systemic diseases can also cause bad breath.
Helicobacter pylori, the cause of stomach cancer, is reflected in bad breath, and people with diabetes have bad breath due to a unique smell (acetone smell).
In order not to overlook disease not only in the mouth but also in the whole body, check the bad breath at the dental examination.
And cleaning your mouth regularly is very important to keep your teeth healthy.
Let's be conscious of "inner care" for teeth
Q. What kind of nutrients should I take for "dental health"?
I'd like you to take the minerals that are in charge of your teeth from your meal.
Also, vitamin C is an essential nutrient for supporting gums, so I advise patients to take plenty of it.
If it is difficult to get it from food, you can supplement it with supplements.
Q. What kind of patients do you recommend Lypo-C to?
Originally, I advocated that vitamin C is necessary for dental health, and Lypo-C has a good absorption rate, so I decided to handle it at the clinic.
Lypo-C is recommended for those who are concerned about their dental health.
There are a certain number of people with thin gums.
People with thin gums have less fiber, so we tell them to take care of them by supplementing the necessary nutrients.
Q.When do you use Lypo-C?
You take Lypo-C when you're nervous (before surgery).
I get very nervous, especially before major surgeries such as implants.
"I have to do it like this...!"
After taking Lypo-C I feel refreshed and ready for treatment, which is very helpful.
Q. Please tell us if there is anything that you are careful about in terms of beauty and health.
I do various things for beauty and health, but first of all, I always stretch and do yoga for 30 to 40 minutes after waking up in the morning.
On the day of the treatment, I am at the clinic all day, so I hardly ever walk.
So when I go to play golf, which is my hobby, I try to walk instead of riding in a cart as much as possible.
Also, I usually only wear high heels, but I try to run in high heels for core training (laughs).
Being beautiful is important to me, but health is the most important thing.
I think that "beauty is above being healthy".
That's why I pay attention to my eating habits, and I think it's the beauty that comes from doing proper posture and core training first.

Q. What made you want to become a dentist?
I grew up in a family of doctors with my father being an internal medicine teacher and my mother a pharmacist, so I wanted to work in the medical field.
I chose dentistry for two reasons.
I was the first girl born after my older brother, so I grew up in a spoiled environment, so I had a lot of cavities. At that time, I had a very painful and painful experience.
Even as a child, I thought, "This is bad!", and realized the importance of dental health.
Another thing is that I was a child who liked to come into contact with beautiful things and art, such as drawing, playing music, and singing.
When I thought about what kind of field could combine medicine and art, I thought "dentist".
Q. I heard that your love of art has led you to hold private jazz concerts.
That's right. Actually, I used to belong to a music office, but I quit when I opened a dental clinic.
Because of that, one day when I made a CD with my friends, people around me said, "I want to listen to live music," so I started a dinner live at a small restaurant.
At first, it was about 50 people, but then it grew to 100, then 200 people, and we needed a bigger venue.

This live is a charity activity, and part of the expenses received from the participants is donated to "Shisei Gakuen", an orphanage in Tachikawa.
my book "Your beauty is determined by the lower 1/3 of your face! 』All sales are donated to charity.
I don't have any children, so I support them through charity activities with the hope that "If I had children, I would want them to be like this."
Japan is currently experiencing a declining birthrate, and one of the reasons for this is that women are getting married later.
I myself didn't know until what age I could have children even if I was working in the medical field.
Also, from a dentist's point of view, recent research has revealed that periodontal disease has various effects on the body, such as making it difficult to get pregnant and making it easier to give birth prematurely.
That's why dental health is so important.
From my experience, I would like young women to know more about their health and take care of themselves.
With that in mind, I would like to continue my activities.
