Relieve fatigue with hot springs and Sri Lankan Ayurveda
A corner written by Yumiko Itakura, a travel and spa journalist who covers hotel spas around the world and continues to experience the roots of health and beauty in each region.
This year, each month, we will focus on one region in Japan and unravel the wellness methods rooted in that region, such as hot springs, spa treatments, and cultural experiences.
Why don't you travel Japan together while exploring the local health methods, healing, and nutritious foods?
This time, we will talk about Kamenoi Hotel Kamogawa in Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture. Mr. Itakura has a deep connection with Sri Lanka. This time in Japan, she experienced a fascinating Sri Lankan Ayurvedic treatment.

A little-known oasis in the metropolitan area rich in nature, close to the sea and mountains
About 2 hours by car from Tokyo. Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, is located in the southeastern part of the Boso Peninsula. Blessed with a warm climate, it has a tropical mood. The Kamogawa River has a strong image of the sea, but it is blessed with mountains such as Mt. Atago and Mt. Kiyosumi, and is rich in greenery. It is also a spiritual land filled with temples and historical buildings, including Tanjoji Temple, which was built as the head temple of Saint Nichiren as the birthplace of Saint Nichiren.
In Kamogawa, how about staying at the rebranded Kamenoi Hotel Kamogawa in July 2022? There are two large hot spring baths in the hotel, "Tenku-no-Yu" with a view of the Pacific Ocean and "Matsukaze-no-Yu" with a beautiful garden. The hot water is a weakly alkaline sulfur-containing sodium-chloride/bicarbonate cold spring that warms the body from the core and smoothes the skin. Both are spacious and offer a sense of openness. There is also a private bath next to Shokaze no Yu, so you can enjoy the privacy of the bath (for a fee).
For guest rooms, we recommend the "Superior Twin Room," which was just opened at the end of April this year. You can see the pine forest outside the window, and the simple and modern design makes you feel comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast are served as a buffet, and you can casually enjoy dishes unique to the area, such as fresh seafood, vegetables, and fisherman's rice.
Experience Sri Lankan Ayurveda in Japan
At the spa "Karunakalara Hotel Spa Kamogawa", which opened in December last year, you can experience Sri Lankan Ayurvedic menus. It is an affiliated store of "Karunakalala Ayurveda Spa & Resort" in Negombo, Sri Lanka. The menu that you should experience is "Whole Body Oil Treatment Standard". In a nostalgic atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in Sri Lanka, a therapist will give you counseling about your daily life and physical condition while drinking plain hot water.
Next, from among three blended oils containing dozens of herbs and spices, we select an oil that suits the guest's constitution and the physical condition of the day. I was having eye strain and sleep deprivation, so I ended up using an oil called Triphala. In Ayurveda, humans have three doshas (energy), vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (water), and the dominant one is the constitution of the person, but Triphala balances all doshas. It is said that it will make you ready, especially the fatigue of the head will be relieved. First, an oil massage is performed on the neck, shoulders, and head while sitting on a chair. You will then be transferred to bed for a front and back massage, including the stomach and chest. After the treatment, your vision becomes clearer and the heaviness of your whole body disappears. The synergistic effect of the hot spring will invite you to a comfortable sleep.
summary
After the rainy season is over, the scorching days will come. In preparation for exhaustion of physical strength by heat, we want to balance mind and body. Ayurveda, the world's oldest traditional medicine, emphasizes regular maintenance of the mind and body to prevent illness. Feel free to go to Kamogawa if you don't feel refreshed. Once you've recovered from the fatigue, you'll have a surge of positive energy and be ready to enjoy summer to the fullest.
